A bulldog is a breed with unusually thick shoulders and a head to match. There are usually heavy overlaps of skin on a bulldog's brow, with black, round, wide-set eyes, a short muzzle with characteristic overlaps called "rope" above the nose, with skin hanging under the neck, drooping lips, and sharp teeth. The bulldog's coat is flat, short and sleek, with colors of red, fawn, white, brindle (mixed colors, often in waves or irregular stripes), and piebalds of these.
In the United States of America, the averaged size male weighs approximately 45 lbs and that for mature females is about 45 pounds for a Standard English Bulldog. In the United Kingdom, the breed standard is 55 pounds for a male and 50 lbs for a female.

While some breeds require their tails to be cut or docked just after being born, bulldogs are one of very few breeds whose tail is naturally short and curled.
